Soroptimist International of Carlisle

Soroptimist International is a vibrant, dynamic organisation for today’s women, committed to a world where women and girls together achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice in creating strong and peaceful communities worldwide.
Every 4 years, Soroptimist International adopts an international joint service project involving all clubs worldwide.  In the past we have:
  • Helped prevent the spread of AIDS in Thailand by giving young women occupational training and scholarships so that they do not have to enter the commercial sex industry
  • Built eye clinics in Bangladesh in collaboration with Sight Savers to prevent pre-school children from going blind
  • Taken care of victims of exploding antipersonnel land mines.  Working with the International Red Cross Soroptimists provided victims with prostheses and helped with their rehabilitation
  • Helped women victims of war in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Rwanda to reclaim their lives after suffering the traumas of war and genocide
  • Supported women and children in extreme poverty in Sierra Leone

We have been promoting 3 E's for the last 4 years: improving the lives and status of women and girls through Education, Empowerment or Enabling opportunities.
During the last year or so we have:
  • Collected toiletries, and other useful items, for the local Women’s Refuge
  • Provided a team, on a seven week rota, to produce the Talking Newspaper for the Blind in Carlisle
  • Helped raise funds for Marie Curie nurses by assisting with the Great Daffodil Appeal
  • Joined in Himalayan balsam pulling to help preserve our river banks with ERT
  • Collected food for and volunteered regularly at our local Food Bank
  • Raised funds for the BIG (Birthing in the Gambia) project
  • Promoted Mary’s Meals in various ways including fund raising and providing backpacks with materials for school children
  • Provided ‘New Start Bags’ for women rescued from trafficking
  • Given Christmas gifts for vulnerable young people locally
  • Knitted to raise funds for Age UK Carlisle & Eden

Through international partnerships and a global network of members, Soroptimists inspire action and create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls by:
  • Advocating equity and equality
  • Creating safe, healthy environments
  • Increasing access to education.
Developing leadership and practical skills for a sustainable future
Programme Action
Our service to the community, which we call Programme Action, involves lobbying, raising awareness and fundraising, locally, nationally and internationally on a range of issues including human rights, the status of women and various environmental and economic matters.

It is often said that organisations are judged by what they accomplish. Our achievements range from international to local successes.
